Recap: StyleX

I've had plenty of time to decompress from StyleX, but I haven't had a lot of time to go through all the footage and photos we got. Nonetheless, I wanted to go ahead and post the bits I've been able to go over.

The theme for this post is hit and miss.

On Thursday, we did a Style Hop, which was a tour around Austin to a few different shops. Hit! I failed to take an outfit picture and captured really poor sound on my video. Miss!

Friday was the first of the runway shows. I love runway shows. Hit!

Next year I'd like a little more pizazz: give me some going-out wear, dim the audience lights, and teach those musicians how to work the runway (they're obviously pretty comfortable on stage). Can I just say that I loved having the musicians as models? It made for a much more interesting and fun show than I usually see. Hit!

I totally regret what I wore, though. Miss!

blouse: thrifted (Savers) | skirt: Kenar (c/o Marshalls) | shoes: c/o ThreadSence | necklace: c/o The Jasmine Gallery | watch: thrifted Michael Kors (Goodwill)

What was I thinking?! This outfit is embarrassingly blah. I almost didn't post this photo of it due to me being afraid to admit that I failed at fashion. However, in the spirit of transparency, here it is! The good thing? It made me realize that I need to amp it up in the style department. I need to have some quality, go-to peieces that I can just grab and go for events like this. I like all the pieces individually, but together, it's just a hot mess. I should have done the blouse with trousers and wedges or the skirt with a simple, silky tank and added heels.

Saturday was the panel I was asked to speak on (title: "Technology is cool, but technology + fashion is cooler"), and I was honored to be speaking alongside folks like Kelly from The Glamourai and Devin from Lyst. Hit!

Saturday's outfit was a little better although I spent a lot more money on my dress than I should have. It's still something that I regret buying but only because I;m not a big spender. I had a 20% discount at Plain Ivey Jane, and I love the shop owner to pieces, so I bought it on a whim. The yellow stitching and the pockets really appealed to me. The detailing on the top was great-- I have never seen a dress like it. However, I think that maybe $100 is too much to spend on a day dress that, frankly, I'm likely not going to wear again. The top was ill fitting on me, but the hanger appeal was so great. Hit and miss!

Overall, StyleX was a hit. It was great seeing so many people come out for a first year event. I know that the organizers worked their tails off, and I'm so proud of Joah and John for that. Can't wait to see what they have up their sleeves for StyleX 2012.

Introducing: Made This / Love This

You guys! I am so excited! Do you know why it's been silent over here since Wednesday? It's because I've been busy working on a brand new project just for us. Allow me to introduce Made This/ Love This, a DIY Collective:
Made This / Love This
Last Tuesday I had mentioned (almost as a joke) that I wanted to start a DIY Collective. Ever since I mentioned it, I could not get it out of my head. I was amazed to get so many responses and emails encouraging me to start something like this.

So Wednesday night I sketched it out, Thursday I started doing a Wordpress mock-up, and then on Friday Chris told me that I should pitch my idea to Capital Factory. Capital Factory is an "an early stage accelerator program for tech startups that provides a small amount of seed capital and weekly mentoring sessions by entrepreneurs who have founded successful companies" based here in Austin. At first I was like, "Tech startup? Me? Uh, I'm just a blogger on Blogger...", so I tried to put all that out of my mind and just crank out a base site for you guys that we could use ASAP (please keep in mind I'm not a developer or designer at all!).

As I was working away, I could not get the idea of pitching this to Capital Factory out of my head. I spent Saturday brainstorming with my friend and awesome web developer Jib on how we could actually make Made This/ Love This awesome in the future. Folks, I think we're on to something! I spent Sunday formulating my pitch and application to Capital Factory, and I spent today filming the first (of many!) projects, which is a very simple t-shirt scarf (no sewing skills required!).

I know that I had mentioned that I wanted to take on sewing projects, and yes, I realize that there is no sewing involved with the t-shirt scarf, but I wanted to start easy and to involve as many people as possible. I hope you'll get involved!

Please check out Made This / Love This, sign up (it's free!), and submit photos of your own t-shirt scarf creations and variations by May first!

Thank you so much for your support and encouragement in my new project! I have the best readers in the entire world, and I hope we can all enjoy Made This / Love This together.

Whoops Wednesday

Last Wednesday I was supposed to go to a Glamourai hosted breakfast at the W, but due to insane SXSW music traffic coming into town, I was stuck in gridlock. I would have been close to 40 minutes late, and I didn't want to be that Austin hippie that breezed in super late, so I tucked tail and went back home.
SXSWednesday
necklace: TheJasmineGallery.etsy.com
watch: thrifted Michael Kors
date: 16 March 11 | occasion: SXSWednesday
maxi: Lulu*s | necklace: The Jasmine Gallery | watch: thrifted Michael Kors | belt: Target | sandals: Savers | clutch: LV

Since I felt like I was all dressed up with no where to go, when I got back home, I grabbed Jude, my best friend Brooke and her kiddo Mitchell, and we braved the traffic and ate sushi on 2nd Street. It ended up being an easy afternoon. Sure, not as fancy as a morning with The Glamourai at the W, but there's always next year.

Can we take a moment to talk about those accessories? These two things are recent acquisitions, but I feel like they are quickly moving up my list of loves.

The necklace from The Jasmine Gallery is an amazing statement piece. It is a naturally fallen deer antler (meaning no deer was harmed in the making of this necklace) and it's housed in a bullet casing. It's exactly the right piece to edge up any outfit, and it's incredibly unique. It's a great conversation starter, and it goes with everything.

The Michael Kors watch was an amazing find. When thrifting in Denton, Texas, I spied this beauty in the case. I am sure that someone accidentally gave this to Goodwill (theories: maybe it was in a purse that was donated or maybe an ex-boyfriend dumped off a box of his former girlfriend's stuff). I have to tell you that I go about thrifting in a new way now; I only buy things that are on my seasonal wants list (in the past I had the tendency to buy the whole darn thrift store, unable to pass up such great deals!). A giant gold watch was on my list, of course inspired by the Michael Kors watch that I've been spying online. It's the real deal, folks, and is still available at ShopBop. Kelly and Kristina wore theirs this week. At first I gulped at the $40 price tag, but after checking the retail price online and seeing that the watch was in perfect condition, I quickly hunkered down the cash. I'm so glad I did.

Austin Monthly: My Top 10

If you read Austin Monthly, you may have seen this gem on page 74 in the April issue:
April Austin Monthly
I was super flattered when Austin at Austin Monthly contacted me to ask my little opinion on my Top 10 Favorite Things. I was photographed by Devi Knowles at Plain Ivey Jane last month.

Because my Top 10 was in the style section of the magazine, I wasn't able to simply name my Top 10 favorite snocone flavors or my Top 10 favorite people. Here's what I chose:

1. Quirky animal jewelry- pictured: a piece by Trash ATX, available at Plain Ivey Jane.
2. My TIKKR watch- i.e. my newest obsession. I'm blaming my friend Nicole for this.
3. Vintage kimono jackets- pictured: one I picked up at an estate sale, last seen here.
4. Giant sunglasses- pictured: a purchase at Buffalo Exchange.
5. Trims at Birds Barbershop- I see Camillle, as seen here.
6. My Canon Rebel T2i- bought on the recommendation from my friend William.
7. Timi & Leslie Diaper Bag- found on Amazon.
8. Cupcakes- Mine are my favorite (I'm an awesome baker!), but Delish is a close second.
9. Kenra Silkening Gloss- found at Ulta, but I pilfered mine from my cousin (sorry, Puoy!).
10. TOMS shoes- pictured: my beloved wedges, first seen here.

If you're local to Austin, feel free to pick up April's Austin Monthly and flip to page 74 and laugh at my photo. I know I certainly did in the HEB checkout line last night!

Strut swap

I can't go to this because I have a standing commitment to my City Group on Wednesdays, but if you're not in my City Group, you should be going to this:
Strut's Facebook page will give you more information. I scored my white jeans (that fit like a dream!) from Swap.com's clothing swap at the TxSCC, so I can only imagine that you'll be able to score some sweetness at the Strut swap, too!

Casting: ATX models for Texas 4000

Hi, there! I'm helping to cast models for the Texas 4000 benefit show next Thursday, March 31st. If you'd like to strut your stuff on the runway for a great cause, come out and see me at the Bo Concept showroom this Friday.
tx4000
We are casting kind-hearted models who would be willing to walk for free to benefit the Texas 4000 which is a ride that benefits cancer research through Lance Armstrong's LIVESTRONG network.

Due to the clothing we'll be showcasing, at this time, we can only consider female models ages 15+, taller than 5'7'' and able to fit into a sample size six or below. We can't pay you, but we can promise that it will be fun and easy. However, you must be able to attend all three of the following:

Short casting call and info meeting:
this Friday, March 25th, 6 pm. Bo Concept showroom (430 W. 2nd Street).
We will simply let you know more information about the show, make sure you can walk (or give you a quick tutorial how), and take some snapshots for the boutiques. We will be choosing sixteen models.

Fittings:
completed by Tuesday, March 29th

Runway show:
Thursday, March 31st. Models must be available by 3 pm for the walk-through. The show starts at 6 pm and ends at 9 pm.

If you're interested in participating, please fill out this form:

Feel free to invite your friends if they fit the specs, too. If you're not super experienced, no problem! We're looking to fill sixteen spots.

We're also looking for a hair and make-up team that can pretty up our sweet sixteen. All inquiries can be sent to me via email. Thanks!

Inspired by BurdaStyle

After all the busyness of Monday (cleaning up from the TxSCC, speaking at SXSW, doing the Lucky Magazine mixer), it felt good to have an easy Tuesday last week. Brooke, Rachel, and I met up at Takoba with the women from BurdaStyle.

I kept it super casual and ended up spilling ceviche juice all over my white jeans. That'll teach me to wear white denim after 1984!

Last summer I learned to sew. I'm not great at it (I can do straight lines... that's about it!), but I do want to get better. I've been eying some patterns on BurdaStyle, and I've been meaning to up the ante in my sewing skills department. Anyone else with me on that? I think it'd be really cool if a group of novice sewers seamstresses (?) take on easy projects together. Maybe twice/ month or so? We can start with easy patterns then showcase what we made. Who's in?

For me, I think maybe my DIY projects are a lot like exercise. I prefer to do workouts with a friend or in a class. I'm most motivated and encouraged when I see that others are on the same journey as I am. Perhaps my DIY projects will be the same. Maybe I'll be more likely to use all the pretty fabric in my stash if I were doing a project together with some friends. If you'd like to be a part of my DIY collective, let me know! I'll announce our first project soon! I promise that it will be fun and easy!

Review and interview with Epiphanie Bags

No doubt you've been admiring my Epiphanie bag in the post below and on the Delightful Dozen blog. Without a doubt, it is the most beautiful camera bag in the entire world. I love it, and I feel like it was a complete necessity during the madness of the TxSCC and SXSW. After being displeased with the quality of the other camera bag I bought, I returned it. Per the recommendation of a couple of you, I checked out Texas-based Epiphanie Bags and found the bag of my dreams. Everyone, meet the Epiphanie Clover bag:
epiphaniebags.com
epiphaniebags.com
epiphaniebags.com
Right off the bat, let's talk about the hefty price tag; yes, I recognize that $184 is nothing to sneeze at.

However, here's how I figure it, like my expensive diaper bag, this is going to be a bag that I use every single day for years and years. Not only does it hold all of my camera gear, but it also holds my laptop (and I'm buying a new laptop soon!). The inside of the bag is completely reconfigurable, so no matter what your equipment it can stay nice and cozy and safe in the bag. I am willing to pay more money for products that are both durable and fashionable. This camera bag will last me longer than my camera, I'm sure!

Maile Wilson, photographer and the designer and owner of Epiphanie was kind enough to do a fun, little interview with me. I love learning more about the people behind the products I love, and I hope you do, too:

Q: How did you come up with such an awesome idea for fashionable camera bags?
A: I love to bring my camera with me everywhere, but it was such a hassle to lug around an extra bulky camera bag. When I went online to find something cute, I realized that didn't exist. So I decided it was time to create a bag that was as stylish as it was functional.

Q: What kind of equipment do you shoot on?
A: Canon, although I have nothing against Nikon. I've just always used Canon.

Q: Which of the bags (style and color) do you think best represents you, Maile?
A: Red Lola for sure.

Q: What is one of your favorite photos that you've taken?
A: This was one of my favorite photo sessions because it wasn't planned. I just snapped photos as we were hanging out, so the result was uncontrived and natural.

The Whitneys from maile wilson on Vimeo.

Q: Describe the worst photo of yourself from your childhood:
A: Hmm, there are so many to choose from. Here are two runner-ups for worst:
1. d-to-the-ork:

or
2. senior picture

Q: If you could go back in time and give anyone an Epiphanie bag, who would it be?
A: My Grandma, because she was always so passionate about business and I know she would have carried it with her everywhere.

Q: What is a current trend in photography that you're not too keen on?
A: I know my fellow Texans are going to kill me, but I'm over the [newborn wearing] tutu thing. I'm also over placing newborns onto foreign objects like dinner platters, or bookshelves.

Q: What is a current trend in fashion that you're way into?
A; High-waisted flare jeans!

Q: Why do fashion bloggers need cuter camera bags?
Because owning a camera or laptop shouldn't mandate that you have to carry around a bulky old Manbag. :)

[Please note: Maile gifted me with my Clover bag after I had requested an interview and put in an order.]

SXSW talky talk: Trust me, I'm an expert.

A couple months ago, I about fell out of my chair when I got an email from SXSW asking me to speak on fashion blogging. In a way, I felt like an impostor. Me speak on fashion blogging? Don't they know that Jane and Judy live here in Texas? Or that Kelly comes back home every SXSW? Or that Kendi is just up the road in Kerrville? There are many other fashion bloggers with much bigger audiences, but I was honored to be asked and jumped at the chance.

By no means do I think I am the end all expert voice on fashion blogging. In fact, I don't even consider Adored Austin a fashion blog (I call it a "personal, self-style and local lifestyle blog"). I don't make a ton of money from doing my blog and I don't know if the way I do things should be the way that everyone should do things. But, nonetheless, I did just helm the Texas Style Council Conference, and I do work closely with a lot of brands and shops and have insight on how brands and bloggers can work together effectively. Plus I really like public speaking, even if I'm not a rock star at it, yet.
sxsw sign
A quote of mine was tweeted and retweeted, so I thought I'd share it with you so you could get an idea of how my discussion went down:
Audience question: What do you do if you are approached by a company to push a product that you don't particularly like?
My answer: I wouldn't. I can't. My readers would call me out on it. For instance, I could never wear...
[and this is where I stalled. I was trying to think of something I wouldn't wear... fur? No. I wear fur. Leather? No. I wear leather...]
-- uh, I would never wear a coat made of cheeseburgers. No wait! That sounds awesome!"
For the record I would wear a cheeseburger coat. Longtime readers know that I love me some cheeseburgers!

Alas, I did not wear a cheeseburger coat. Instead, I kept is classy in a maxi:
sxsw outfit
chains
epiphaniebags.com
date: 14 March 11 | occasion: SXSW presentation
dress: Lulu*s | belt: Buffalo Exchange | sandals: Savers | bag: Epiphanie

I was excited that Turi and Natasha from ModCloth, Andrew from Portable.tv, Caroline from Lucky Magazine, and Naomi from Teen Vogue were in attendance. The room was almost full, and everyone looked really great and added a lot to the discussion. I could get used to this speaking thing.

In other news, I should consider finding a cheeseburger sponsor for Adored Austin...

Final TxSCC recap: Sunday

Our last day of the Texas Style Council was one week ago. We rented out Ballet Austin, which proved to be the perfect downtown venue for a symposium on style and social media. This was the day that I was most nervous about. I had never been to a blogging conference before, and I was flying blind as to how to actually throw one. Despite all my hand-wringing, we were able to present a very informative and very fun event.

I was dressed by one of our conference underwriters and well-known Texas shop Strut.
TxSCC SundayLe Mode bag
date: 13 March 11 | occasion: TxSCC symposium
shorts: Strut | blouse: Strut | boots: Wanted | watch: TIKKR | bag: Le Mode

Do you recognize that bag? It's the Le Mode traveling bag that was previously seen on Kendi and is going to Chelsea next!
Le Mode bag
It ended up being the perfect size for the weekend, and the long strap made it an easy wear. It comes in four different colors: navy, mocha, maroon, and camel. See them all here. The mocha one that I got to use is my favorite.

I wanted to take some time to do a TxSCC Sunday recap on all the panels, but alas, I'm feeling the burn of being a week behind on blogging. There are so many other great blogs out there that have excellent recaps, and Grechen and I are going to take a week off from all this and then come back and pound out a really great recap eBook that will be available online. We'll also be revamping the Texas Style Council website. But, man, I feel like I haven't slept in ages, and I bet Rachel (the intern) and Grechen are feeling the same way.

I will say this, though: I left the conference with a renewed sense of drive and determination to make Adored Austin better and more interactive. I've been meeting with people to figure out the best way to make that happen. I hope to roll out some great changes in bits and pieces over the next few months.

TxSCC recap: Saturday Go-Game and Bo Concept Party

Saturday was the fullest day of the Texas Style Council. We started the day off doing registration, and signing people up for The Go-Game, which is a tech-based scavenger hunt company we hired to do a team building game all around the 2nd Street District. We thought it was a creative way that our attendees could get to know each other and the 2nd Street District better. We had fabulous prizes from Lulu*s ($100 gift cards), ModCloth (purses), Langford Market, Girl Next Door, and Estilo, ($50 gift cards), Lofty Dog (Austin shirts for puppies), Glass Art (statues), Bo Concept (candle holders), Mercury (candles), Peyton's Place (travel packages), and lots more!

Here's a couple of the teams, mid-competition:

Since I was running around like crazy, I wanted to wear shorts. I picked out this amazing romper from Lulu*s and paired it with my nude wedges:

After the scavenger hunt, we headed to Bo Concept where we had a pop-up shop event. I changed into a LBD for that and Rae Cosmetics came and did my make-up:

The party was perfection. Dillar and Ryan and the rest of the Bo Concept team made it one of the most fun events I have ever been to in my life. I was even able to relax and socialize, instead of playing party planner all night. Treaty Oak Rum and Graham's Sweet Tea Vodka dropped off some drinks. VOGA Italia and the Great American Cookie Company kept us in great spirits with their amazing wine and cookie cakes:

I pretty much ate one of these by myself after the conference. So good!

I wasn't a wine drinker until I tried theirs!

Plaid Pigeon did the decorations, and I'm now a huge, personal fan of theirs:

Best planters, ever! Rawr!

TIKKR set up a VIP lounge with a curtain of TIKKR watch bands. This curtain tempted me, and I traded my mint green band for a baby pink one and now I'm having deep regrets, by the way:

Check out TIKKR at StyleX if you haven't already!

Our official photographer Nathan Russell brought in a photobooth area and posted every photo taken from the party here. These are howl worthy! I love them, and the Russells have made themselves an indispensable part of my parties from here on out. I've already asked them to work TxSCC 2012! See the whole set HERE. Here are some of my favorites:

I love these girls! Those were not prop costumes! That's what they came to party in!

TIKKR founder Cory Stout with Peacock Plume owners Holly and Cara.

These are a few of my awesome friends who came to the party even though they don't have fashion blogs! They had a great time!

[all party photos by Nathan Russell]

Stay tuned. I"ll recap the last day of the TxSCC, including the panels. It was a blast, and I can't believe it's already over! Save the date for TxSCC '12: March 9-11!

TxSCC recap: Friday Clothing Swap

The Texas Style Council Conference, for me, kicked off a couple months ago when Grechen and I really started planning it. But for everyone else, it started a week ago, last Friday, March 11th.

One of our incredibly generous underwriters was Swap.com and The Swapaholics. I had been a longtime fan of Swapaholic Amy from Punky Style and The Haberdash, so I was super duper excited that she was one of the first people that I met on Friday.
TXSCCSwap85
[Jen, me, Amy, Suze, Amy, Kelsey]

And do you see who that is on the left? Oh, yes, people, that's Jen from Jen Loves Kev. I was a little star struck, but very happy to meet someone that I truly consider an inspiration and now get to call my friend. I insist that she comes back next year with Kev and Rowan. Kev can hang out with Chris, and Rowan and Jude can fall in love.

The swap was amazing! I have been to a few clothing swaps here in Austin, but this one was top notch. Amy and Melissa have the set-up down to a science. Women dropped their clothes off at the empty store front that was given to us to use for the weekend by the 2nd Street District, and at 7:00 for the next hour and a half, we organized and tagged, while the swappers lined the block outside. By 8:00 there were close to 100 people in line already!

At 8:30, the doors promptly opened, and the swappers blew through the store, gathering new treasures.

The organizers were pretty casual about it: it was bring a bag, take a bag, but no one was very strict. We were instructed to bring what we loved but only take what we love. In the end, there were even a few items Swap.com was able to donate to Goodwill. I was able to snag a pair of white jeans that fit like a dream.

Since this was the first event of the Texas Style Council Conference, I wanted to match the poster as best as I could. Our theme for the weekend was "Cowboys and Ballerinas":

Look at this adorable Wikifashion bag. They generously provided our totes for the Texas Style Council Conference, and I'm so excited that it's something that I'll actually want to carry around and use!

More recaps to come! Please tweet @2ndStreetDistrict and @Swap to tell them thank you for making the swap possible.

What I've been wearing

I'm going to be slammed busy with StyleX and SXSW commitments until Saturday, and I've created quite a back log of outfit posts. I'll start recapping the Texas Style Council tomorrow! In the meantime, here's a glimpse at what I've been wearing.

Detail shots of the previous outfits and recaps of my days coming soon! I also owe you a review on/ interview with Epiphanie Bags and a little post about the Le Mode Accessories traveling bag that I got from Kendi. Thanks for your sweet patience with me, y'all.

What are you doing tomorrow?

Oh, nothing. Just doing brunch at the W Hotel with The Glamourai...
She dropped by Ballet Austin on Sunday for the Texas Style Council Conference, and I was invited to the brunch she's hosting at the W tomorrow. Then on Saturday we'll be on panel together during StyleX.

She's like a Disney Princess, y'all. People are constantly snapping her photo and smiling at her in awe. I'm like the Disney popcorn peddler in the background, but because I might get caught in the line of her fans' photography fire, I should probably wash and brush my hair the next time I'm within photo range.

My outfit from Sunday:
shorts & blouse gift from Strut.
Boots gift from Wanted (cream sold out).

HELP!

Hi! I miss you! I miss you SO HARD.

I did this to you last year during SXSW. I really need someone to tell me how I can blog during the madness of SXSW, The Texas Style Council Conference, and StyleX. I am trying to convince Chris that an iPad is the solution. (Back me up on this, okay?)

To help me with the insanity that is my life, I got an intern!
I love rachel
Nathan Russell
Photo taken at our Bo Concept party

You guys! She is the dream intern and she is ONLY FIFTEEN. She writes a fashion column for her high school paper, and she is smart and funny and an absolute joy to work with. She remembers where I put my keys, she reminds me to eat when I get too busy, and in four days she has become an essential part of my life. You see, I have the tendency to bite off more than I can chew, so Rachel is here to help me digest some of that. (Ew. That was a creepy analogy, wasn't it?). Anyway...

I have so much to say about the wonderfulness of this weekend, but alas, a cookie cake from The Great American Cookie company is calling my name. And so is my bed.

If you missed my talk at SXSW today, I'll be speaking at StyleX on Saturday. In the meantime, please say hello to Rachel!
