Blog of the Week: The Snail and the Cyclops

In honor of my Boston/ California vacation, The Snail and The Cyclops is an apropos choice for Adored Austin's Blog of the Week. Francesca, who runs The Snail and the Cyclops, is an Boston based fashion blogger and Etsy vintage- shop owner who is relocating to the Bay Area this weekend!

I just discovered her site (thank you, Google), and I spent a big chunk of last night oooh-ing and aww-ing at her photos. She is a lover of vintage, but not fake Urban Outfitters vintage or easy to find 80's vintage. This is a lady who collects and loves legitimate vintage from the 1940's and 1950's.

To see some envy inspiring vintage clothing, accessories, and home goods and to take a gander at some beautiful photos, I recommend checking out The Snail and the Cyclops... no matter if you prefer the east coast or the west coast.

I rocked Rockport

Day two of my Boston trip! Today we walked the rocks on the Gloucester coast and then drove up to Rockport for my very first lobster roll! It was delicious. The seafood here is so much better than the "seafood" in Texas (duh!). I don't think I've ever had lobster this yummy in all of my life. I think this guy was swimming around happily up until this morning:

It's beautiful here, and I'm having a marvelous time. Hubs' family lives in Middleton, which is about 30 minutes north of Boston. We haven't yet gone shopping, but I think we'll be doing a little of that tomorrow and Wednesday. Per your suggestions, I'll definitely try to hit up The Garment District and one of the Poor Little Rich Girl shops before we leave.

I miss Jimi, but Hubs' family has two rambunctious doggies that we get to spend time with. I love how Jackie (in the top photo) wanted to get in my self- style photo this morning.

Today does not feel like Monday at all. Whenever I'm on vacation, my internal calendar gets all jacked up. It feels like Wednesday to me, which means I keep thinking that Project Runway is on tomorrow. Last week was the very first time I ever saw it, and I'm officially an addict (thanks, Abby). I kinda wish Tim Gunn would adopt me as his half- Asian/ half- Indian daughter and then dispense fashion and life advice to me on a semi- daily basis. Can someone make that happen, please?

I pack light

38 pounds
Dear world,
Please take note:
My suitcase weighed 12 pounds less than Hubs' suitcase!
Sincerely,
Indiana Adams

Plane outfit

Here I am in Boston, and boy did I screw up by only packing one pair of jeans! It's a very crisp 55º here (compared to 90º in Austin), and I haven't taken my sweater off even once!

I have a confession to make: I don't really like wearing jeans. I have some amazing jeans in my collection, but I feel so man-ish whenever I wear jeans... even if I pair 'em with heels and a cute top. What's the deal? While in Boston, it is my mission to find a pair of slim fitting jeans (preferably with ankle zippers) that make me feel feminine to the max.

Whenever I fly, I dress for warmth and comfort. I'm always freezing on airplanes, and I like to nap as soon as I finish my copy of Sky Mall. So when I got dressed this morning, I put on this... um... creative ensemble:
fatboy
American Apparel Circle Scarf, Target boyfriend t-shirt, Thailand neck scarf, Joe's Jeans, and Toms Shoes.

Then I got inside, uploaded this photo to Flickr and gasped (yes, GASPED) in horror at my outfit. I looked like a chunky little Asian boy! What was a I thinking? (By the way, I am horrified to even be posting this outfit, but dear readers, you have the right to know that I make bad choices sometimes. Gosh, I'm only human!). The only thing in this photo that is acceptable is my laptop bag. My laptop bag is awesome, and I've been told on multiple occasions that it may be the prettiest computer bag in the world:
prettiest computer bag in the world!

You should know that if I feel like I'm dressed frumpy, I will act grumpy. Since a grump is not a good travel companion, I hauled butt to the closet and re-evaluated my flight wear. I finally settled on this, instead (and tucked the Circle Scarf in the bag for later):
Plane Jane
date: 29 August 2009
occasion: airplaning to Boston
vintage sweater: estate sale
dress: American Apparel
tank: American Apparel
vintage scarf (as belt): gifted from Grandma
shoes: thrifted from Savers
laptop bag: Abbi New York

I ended up being perfectly comfortable and didn't feel at all frumpy OR grumpy. Aside from the crying baby three rows back and the freaked out cat in a bag two rows back and the man with gas in my row, it wasn't a bad flight at all!

Out of curiosity, what do y'all wear when you fly?

So long sweet summer

I leave for Boston tomorrow, and I have this preposterous idea in my head that when I return (in a week) that it will no longer be summer in Austin. This is absurd, I know, because if I have learned anything in the last three years living in Texas, I know that it will still be sweltering through most of October.

Perhaps I was feeling a bit inspired by the outfit Jessica wore yesterday over at What I Wore. I, too, wanted to wear my favorite summer blouse with my go-to cutoffs at least one last time before fall.

I'll be in Boston for the next six days, then I am going to California for my friend's wedding the following weekend. I'll be back to my regular scheduled blog content on Monday, Sept. 7th, but please keep checking back between now and then. I plan to have some scheduled posts lined up in my absence, and I also hope to get online a few mornings to post some photos. I set my phone up last night to do mobile blogging, and all the comments you leave now go to my email which is hooked up to my phone. I'll be gone, but hopefully, I'll still be connected! I'm not sure what my itinerary is for the week, so I can't promise that I'll be able to do my self-style photos each day, but I'll try! Be good while I'm gone, okay? And mind the sitter.

Miss Piggy is my hero

I am not even kidding when I say that Miss Piggy is one of my favorite fashion icons. She is fabulous and fearless! One of my acting goals is to be in a Muppet Movie. How awesome would it be if Piggy and I could do a fashion talk-show together?

I am a huge fan of style trademarks, and I love that she has been rocking her lux lashes and satin gloves since the 70's. Last week, she met with Marc Jacobs to pick out an outfit for Macy's Glamorama (a fashion benefit event), and last night she debuted her Marc Jacob looks on the red carpet.

I wonder if Marc Jacobs makes that white leather biker's jacket in a not-Muppet size.

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and Lady GaGa, take note. This is how Muppet fashion is done.

Second hand chiffon

Trying to mix it up a wee bit, I trekked across the lane to snap today's photo in the easement behind my neighbor's house. Granted, it will never be as awesome as the magical place where The Clothes Horse takes her photos, (um, because check out the trash by my boots) but it was a nice change from standing by my wood fence or in front of my planting boxes, right? Well, maybe not. It kinda smelled like dog poop over there and I tripped on an abandoned tire, almost dropping my tripod and camera and bag. I tripped so hard that my neighbor came out to see what the ruckus was. Oops! I'm okay, neighbor!

occasion: shopping, again and possibly hitting up Dueling Glamazons later tonight
chiffon dress: thrifted via Savers (as seen in the closet video)

The bottom two photos crack me up, so I thought I would share them. I was so sleepy this morning that I did not bring my A- game for my daily snaps (this maybe explains the colossal trip over the tire, actually!). In the photo on the left, I seriously think I'm telling the self-timer on the camera to give me a second. In the photo on the right, I'm wondering out loud if the wind is going to keep my new bangs intact.

I have two other stories for you today. The first one is boring and the second one is weird:
1. That sunflower grew right under my bird feeder. Every day Hubs and I feed our cardinal families a half gallon of black oil sunflower seeds, and each autumn a beautiful, proud sunflower blooms.

2. This dress was purchased at Savers, but it used to belong to one of my very best friends! I saw it at Savers, and I passed it up because it was a teensy bit too big, but then I regretted it non-stop for the next 48 hours. I finally called my friend Melissa to see if she wanted to go thrifting with me (and subsequently back to Savers so I could save that dress) and she was like, "Yes! I just donated some stuff to Savers so I have a 20% off coupon." We got there, and I started flipping furiously through the dresses. Much to my delight, this dress was still there. I showed it to Melissa and she started laughing and exclaimed, "Oh my gosh! I donated that dress last week. If I would have known you would have liked it, I would have just given it to you!" Oh, well. I still think this chiffon number was worth the money. It fits just right with a belt.

Tomorrow: LuLu's Giveaway

Last Monday, I professed my love for LuLu's, and golly was I excited when they contacted me about doing a giveaway here on Adored Austin. Tune in tomorrow morning for an incredibly outstanding LuLu's giveaway! To prepare, you may want to go ahead and peruse the LuLu's website.

Bang up job!

Well, I got new bangs! Later today Hubs' former band mate and his wife will be here, and we're all going to go out for dinner. The bangs and my new skirt from last weekend will make their debut around town.

The bangs are still taking some gettin' used to! I really like them. It's just that I don't quite feel like me. I go from feeling like one of these four ladies at any given moment:
Bangs
No matter what your view is on Bai Ling, Winnie Cooper, Brenda Walsh, or Emily the Strange, it's a very weird thing to feel like someone who isn't me. Who knew that my hair held so much of my feelings of personal identity?

Trend Alert: Doc Martens are back!

Just because Melrose Place and Beverly Hills, 90210 have been revamped in 2009 does not mean that all things 90's should be allowed to come back.

The exception, of course, is Doc Martens. I still have my low, brown Docs from high school, bit I'm in the market for a tall pair of metallic or floral Docs for fall, though.
Trend alert: Doc Martens
Speaking of the 90's and Doc Martens and come-backs and television, can someone please make sure that since we're re-doing things that were near and dear to my heart more than a decade ago that My So-Called Life and Daria can jump on board this come-back boat, too? That would pretty much make me happy for like ever.
Best 90's shows, ever!

Video: The Bang Acquisition

During Austin Fashion week, I went to a fashion/ hair/ make-up show at Avenue Five Institute which is a high end beauty school here in Austin. I was so thoroughly impressed with what I saw, that I knew I wanted to go there for my next hair cut.

Yesterday was the big day. I got the big bang chop... something that has taken me two years to get the courage to do!

Kara did an amazing job (and I found out that she's from Indiana, too!). My new fringe is exactly how I pictured it, but I'll admit that it's going to take some getting used to. It's like when you buy a new perfume: you like the smell, but it hasn't quite become your scent, yet. I like my bangs, but I'm so not used to seeing them on my head!

If you live near Austin, I highly recommend checking out AvenueFive for all your hair and day spa needs. The prices are insanely reasonable ($12 for a shampoo, cut, and style/ $20 for a 55 minute facial!). The students seem very knowledgeable and deliberate, and the instructors are on the floor making sure the students are doing a bang up job.

I have no idea why I waited two years to do this!

Introducing Big Blue

Man, oh, man, it's going to be one of those "running around like a chicken with its head cut off days". Tonight is my new bangs haircut (well, hopefully), but before that I have to finish cleaning the house. Hubs' old band mate and his wife are visiting us tomorrow from Georgia! Then I get to make dinner for my dear friend Abby who is having surgery today. But before that, I need to run to the mall to buy a new tube top (more on that later) and a pair of shoes to go with the blue dress I just bought for next week's wedding. Immediately after I finish this post, I need to make a trip to the post office, the grocery store, Target, and (the dreaded) mall. Forget going to the gym! No time!

I'm going to the post office today because I am sending Big Blue on to her next destination. What's Big Blue, you ask? Well, Big Blue is a really fun, DIY chain that Mary over at Style Fyles started. She took a basic eyelet shirt from Banana Republic and dyed it blue. Then she had the inspired idea to pass it around the fashion blogger community to have us add our creativity to it. I was the second recipient, and I simply replaced the drawstrings with crisp, white, grosgrain ribbon:
Big Blue detailsIntroducing: Big Blue
date: 25 August 2009
occasion: running errands galore
shirt: DIY Chain 2009, modified Banana Republic via Buffalo Exchange
skirt: Old Navy
shoes: Alfani
belt: Target

I have to go to the dreaded mall today, because my dog ate my white tube top from Express. This was my only white tube top, and it was a basic staple of my wardrobe. This may have happened on the same day he ate my favorite dress. I found it rolled up under the couch, where he obviously tried to hide the evidence.
My dog is a jerk
Even though he's cute, my dog is still a jerk. I'm just glad he didn't eat Big Blue.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

This is not a joke: in the epic summer of 2006, I once wore this shirt to a bar with my dear friend Siobhan. A drunk frat boy came up to me and said, "Duuuuude! You look like Beetlejuice to me!"

Needless to say, I was embarrassed and a little insulted, but then in complete seriousness he added, "I love Beetlejuice! That's hot," and he proceeded to hit on me.

I don't know what disturbed me more: the fact that I looked like Beetlejuice to him or the fact that he found Beetlejuice attractive.

Adored Boston?

From this Saturday, August 29 until next Friday, September 4, I will be in Boston. I've never been to Boston before, and I'm really, really excited. I don't know how much shopping we'll get to do as Hubs and I are visiting his mother, but I imagine we'll get out and about daily. Any suggestions on where I should go? Food? Thrifting? Affordable and unique decor?

Please comment me with your Boston suggestions, you wonderful, darling, helpful people! Thank you!

Stellar Seller: LuLu's

I will never forget the day I discovered LuLu's. It was before I started Adored Austin, and I was catching up on some blogs over at Tumblr. Someone had posted a photo of a lovely sundress for sale at LuLu's, and it was love at first site. Later that day, I discovered Kansas Couture and was delighted to see that she was a LuLu's fan, too.I love LuLu's because their prices are phenomenal. The Honeysuckle Ruffle Dress (above) is on sale right now for $39.50.

Honestly, the cheap prices initially freaked me out, but after placing my first order, I discovered that even though the prices are low, the quality of clothes is way better than Forever 21 (so feel free to wash your LuLu's clothes without fear of them falling apart!). The prices fall somewhere between F21 and Urban Outfitters, but on top of that, they're always emailing discount codes and having amazing sales. Also, if an item is made in the U.S. (and a lot of the items are) they make sure to note "lovingly made in the U.S.A." in the description.

They get new stuff every single week, and since they only order limited quantities, the inventory is always changing and staying fresh.

Something that I appreciate is the fact that they have a wishlist option. I have found that this is a great way to keep track of stuff you'd like to purchase. My birthday is in October, and I plan to simply give Hubs the info for my LuLu's wishlist in hopes that he gets me something (or several somethings!) from their site.

Here's a sample of some of my fall picks from my wishlist:
LuLu*s wishlist
1. Sequin Affair Crop Jacket: $70
2. Democracy of Nevermind- Rockstar Black Skinny Zip Jeans: $99
3. Silver Screen Handbag: $39
4. Alternative Apparel- Burnout tee: $24
5. Black Petite Fleur Necklace: $29
6. Pink Duchess- Black Vegan Lace-up Shoes: $24
Check out LuLu's at:

I need a (super) hero

People tell me all the time that "Indiana Adams" sounds like a superhero name, and sometimes people ask me if I am, in fact, a superhero. Sorry, kids. I wish.

If I could be a superhero, I would be The G'litterer (pronounced guh-lit'-er-er). I'd kinda be like Spiderman, 'cept instead of shooting a web-like substance from my wrist, I'd shoot glitter. Glitter is awesome and usually makes me so happy, but as Demetri Martin once said, "Glitter is the herpes of craft supplies", so depending on how you see it, my G'litterer superpowers can be used for both good and evil.

I was feeling superhero-esque this morning in my new thrifted Power Rangers t-shirt:
morphin' time: dual imageIt's Morphin' Time
date: 22 August 2009
occasion: frantically cleaning the house like a coked out janitor
shirt: thrifted via Savers (yesterday)
skirt: American Apparel
belt: Buffalo Exchange (new merch)
shoes: thrifted via Savers
sunglasses: Urban Outfitters

Today the hubs and I are cleaning our house like mad because we leave in a week for Boston and then California. Our awesome friend is house and dog sitting, so we want to make sure we leave them with a clean house. Plus, it's always nice to come back from vacation to a neat home.

If the G'litterer could have a second superpower (like Spiderman has his Spidey Sense), I'd want her to be able to make her house clean itself... kinda like Mary Poppins, 'cept without all the song and dance fanfare. I just need it to get done, pronto!

Blog of the week: Delightfully Tacky

Sometimes you hap upon a blogger and you're like, "Dude! Where have you been all my life?" Such is the case with me finally discovering the wonderfulness that is Delightfully Tacky. I don't even remember how I first stumbled upon her site (maybe she came here? maybe I found her through Ideé Géniale?), but nonetheless, this girl has some crazy awesome, original, and bold stylings going on over there.Delightfully Tacky is delightful, indeed! Her photos are always large and visually interesting. Seriously. They look like they came straight from a Nylon fashion spread. The blog itself is the perfect mix of fashion commentary, self- style photos, humor, vulnerability, and DIY. Plus she makes these incredible feather and floral headbands that she plans to sell on Etsy soon:I am coo-coo for her headbands, and of course, her bangs.

Warning: this post starts out talking about plaid, but then it moves on to BABIES

I kind of have a crush on lumberjacks. There. I said it.

I'm pretty sure it's all the red plaid that lumberjacks sport. Confession: when flannel was all the rage back in the early 90's, I stole all my grandpa's red plaid shirts and rocked the heck out of them. I'm so pleased that plaid is back for the second straight fall season. If my grandpa were still alive today, I'm pretty sure I'd be raiding his plaid collection, instead of raiding the little boys' section of Savers.
Plaid collage
date: 21 August 2009
occasion: thrifting, crafting, and a date night with the husband
vintage chiffon prairie dress: Buffalo Exchange (purchased last weekend)
plaid shirt: Polo via Savers (purchased today)
red elastic belt: Savers (purchased today)
yellow bag: F21
wedges: Victoria Spencer (Shoe Carnival)

I always feel like a weirdo shopping in the little boys' section of thrift stores. I don't think I look old enough to have a size large kid, so I sometimes wonder what the moms are thinking of me as I fill my cart with little boy clothes. I am sure they think that I'm either 1-) a perv, or 2-) a crazy girl who is stocking up for the future.

And you know what? I actually may be very close to becoming #2. During my ThriftTown excursion yesterday, I caught myself running my hands over a Jenny Lind changing table and wistfully starring at it for like ever! So... it's official, then. The husband has had baby fever for a while now, and now my biological clock has betrayed me and has ramped up to join him! I am kinda also blaming the ever stylish Melissa of Stay Forever Sunday who is maybe the most adorable pregnant person of all time and is chronicling it all over at Dear Baby.

Dear Baby Fever,
Go away! Maybe come back in late 2012, okay?
Love,
Indiana (and all her new clothes that fit her just fine just the way she is now, thankyouverymuch.)

Today's Thrifting Treasures

Oh, good gracious! Today was another afternoon of thrifting. The husband and I are going to Boston in a week to visit his mom and from there we'll be hitting up the California Bay Area for our guy friend's wedding. I was on a mission to find a one piece bathing suit for the pool at the mom-in-law's and a jewel toned dress for the nuptials.

Since it's Tax Free weekend, I thought today would be a good day to do said purchases. I thought since I was heading down to Buffalo Exchange, that I'd go ahead and take my "to sell" pile with me. Out of the items from last week's video, I kept the two highest rated items: the green disco dress and Melissa's black chiffon dress. I took the rest to see what they'd buy. To my surprise (but per usual) the buyer bought the six items I thought for sure they'd pass on:
BX buys
They bought the F21 leopard dress for $9.50, the Wet Seal floral summer dress for $8.50, the husband's BDG jeans for $16.50, the black vest for $9.50, the O'Neil camo shorts for $11.00, and the grey corduroy Target skirt for $7.50. The also bought an outstretched tri-blend American Apparel sweat shirt for $10.50, three Halloween costumes (a fairy costume for $13.00, a go-go dancer dress for $15.50, and a faux leather Native American shirt and top for $17.00), a purse I had purchased there two years ago for $8.00, and an ugly hat I bought on a whim at Rue 21 for $6.50.

The total price was $166.00! You can opt to take 50% of that in store credit or 35% of that in cash. Since I needed to find a dress and a swimsuit, I opted for the store credit and began to shop around. The store wasn't crowded at all, much to my delight. I started in the dresses and instantly found the dress for the wedding! It was a identical to a dress I had tried on last weekend, but this one was a size smaller (what I needed) and still had the tags attached. Score! I also found a Banana Republic faux fur cropped jacket that is almost identical to the $695 chubbie at kate spade, an elephant necklace, and two items from the 50% off rack: a white lace wedding jacket that I plan to dye (inspired by Mary at StyleFyles) and a skirt from the Go Line at Target. Out of pocket, I spent $1.75, and let me tell you: it was freaking awesome to pay for my Buffalo Exchange purchases with coins!

Next stop was Savers where I found the swimsuit and a little boy's plaid shirt that fit me perfectly, a red belt, and a Power Rangers t-shirt.
Today's Thrifted treasures
1. Swimsuit, C-Collection via Savers- $3.99
2. Elephant necklace, Buffalo Exchange- $12.50
3. Faux fur cropped jacket, Banana Republic via Buffalo Exchange- $18.00
4. Lace wedding jacket, Victor Costa via Buffalo Exchange, $4.75
5. Plaid button down (boys), Ralph Lauren via Savers- $5.99
6. Red elastic belt, Savers- $1.99
7. Power Rangers authentic vintage tee, Savers- $4.99
8. Target Go International skirt (NWT) via Buffalo Exchange- $4.50
9. MM Couture dress (NWT) via Buffalo Exchange- $28.50

Grand total spent? $18.71. You can't see me right now, but I am doing an extremely nerdy victory dance!
